Anatomy doesn't work that way. - Signs of A Madwoman

About Anatomy doesn't work that way.

So some of you may have seen the cover released for X-men: xenogenesis #3. I stopped reading Marvel ages ago, and it seems to be for good reason.

When I saw it, I had to reel back in horror- not only is the entire pose a big pile of DERP, along with posing Emma Frost like that fork is meant to be a substitute for the male reader's penis... but the anatomy. OH GOD, the ANATOMY (oh the humanity!).

Here, have some helpful redlining:

As my notes on the picture point out: first thing that hits me: MONSTER HIPS. I mean, I think 75% of her mass is in there! And there is so much mass there, those toothpick ankles are going to snap the second she stands. Her boobs apparently are flatten against some invisible board- the top curves don't match the bottoms! Or the sides! Apparently she's also missing a brain, because SHE HAS NO FOREHEAD. W. T. F.

I tried, also, to red line what a normal human being might look like in that position.

And suddenly I understand why I knew I was never cut out to be a comic book artist. Because I may have an imagination, but even I'm not creative enough to pass that off as a (good!) human body.

I actually saw that earlier and blinked. Even allowing for some stylisation, it doesn't even look attractive.

I'm trying to work out how her leg is supposed to be shaped, but it just doesn't seem geometrically possible.

here from The Hathor Legacy

I think her ankle is so thin that it would snap from the weight of those platform shoes.

for me, it's not that her anatomy is exaggerated and distorted. it's that hers is and his isn't.

Same here! I just get a photobucket image saying that the image violated their terms of use. (Which, huh? How could the first redlining be violation if the second one isn't?)

I'm a long-time X-Men reader, and I follow Astonishing religiously, but... I dropped Xenogenesis after the first issue. Dropped it cold. Their bizarre interpretation of Emma and Storm's bodies (not to mention the fact that they aged down Hisako in a horrifying way) ruined the book for me. Their bodies were disfigured and manipulated in a way that made me embarrassed and angry and sad.

Also, her seven-foot hair. Emma would never put up with seven-foot hair, she's not Meggan. >:(

Yeah, I have to agree. The art does matter. I've been following Astonishing X-men from the beginning. The first time I saw the cover for Xenogenesis, I dropped the series.

I just couldn't bring myself to buy it.
